Birth Control..!!

I got periods late last night, I am thinking to start birth control today for the first time.. bit scared. Is it gonno b fine with my periods or would it stop the flow ?? I am 26 me and my boyfriend considered this for first time as we were not sexual often but now we are thinking to be safe until we get married till next year. Please advise.. Would there b any side effects. Would i get periods next month??
