Obligated to do IUI?

Question

Are we obligated to try IUI or will a fertility specialist honor if we want to go straight for IVF? I imagine it’s a case by case basis but we’d rather go straight for IVF. And btw, I want to thank those who have taken the time to answer my questions. This helps me more than you know 💕!

If you are paying on your own, you should be able to do what you want. If you have insurance, you might have to do some first (I did).

For me, it was dependent on insurance. We wanted to go straight to IVF and the RE was on board but we were nervous that our insurance would make us try IUI first for a few months. Luckily because I had a couple miscarriages prior, they considered it recurrent miscarriage and approved IVF coverage.

Our RE preferred IUI first for us, since there are more risks with IVF. We were okay with that, but had insurance to cover it so that wasn’t an additional factor.

My doc let us choose and we went straight to IVF. The 50% success rate of IVF was so much better than IUI!

As most have said, it can depend on insurance... but it also depends on your diagnosis. My husband has no sperm from chemo, we jumped right to icsi ivf because anything else would be a waste of time. It really depends on the prognosis  and then insurance.

We were told by the consultant (UK) that IUI doesn’t really have any more chance of working than IVF. They don’t do IUI on the NHS where we are, you just go straight to IVF. We’re now sat waiting for our turn on the list....

Depends on insurance. Some insurances make you do so many iui before Ivf. You’ll need to call and ask them. Mine did not and I jumped straight to ivf.
