How much money is appropriate to spend on your child for holiday gifts?

Va

This isn’t about personal budget, but more what you think of as reasonable to spend on each child for holiday gifts (Christmas, Hanukkah, etc)... is there a magic amount in your mind that is reasonable without being ‘spoiling’ or excessive. I know some people may want to spend more then they can afford, or some choose to really limit gifts to makes sure the reason around the holiday is the true focus and less about ‘stuff’... whatever your prerogative I am just curious to know what you all gauge as normal.

Based on NRF’s (National Retail Federation) annual consumer spending survey, Americans plan to spend an average of $1,047.83 this year, up 4 percent from last year ($1,007.24). Spending falls into three major categories:

Gifts for family, friends and coworkers: $658.55

Non-gift holiday purchases such as food, greeting cards and decoration: $227.26

Other non-gift purchases for themselves and their families: $162.02

Bonus Question: Does it depends on any other factor? Age? Behavior? What they ‘really want the most’ in their wish list?
