Is it racist?

Me and my husband work together. In our profession where we work most people are Hispanic (we also live in area in California that is mostly Hispanic people). On many many occasions we have been called gringo / Gringa and he has been address as whetto (not sure how you spell). I don’t know if it’s meant to be rude or racist since some of these people are friendly with us as well. But it does feel a little insulting when they use those terms and I would never call them a slang word for Hispanic or Mexican. Do you think they are being racist towards us?

Hispanics use terms in Spanish that if they were used in English, they would be very offensive. They are not meant to be that way. We call people by the color of their skin, by their weight if they are fat or skinny, and a whole bunch of other words that in any other language would make you cringe. That’s just how we communicate. It’s from the heart lol

The word gringa/gringo is not at all equivalent to racial slurs!! It is a term of endearment, like "ah, you sweet white lady", don't take offense!
They have plenty of nicknames among themselves, terms for lighter and darker skinned people, among other traits, that are also not offensive. Don't worry!

Gringo and gringa are terms they use for white or light skinned. Wera and wero (it’s a rolled R sound you’re hearing-not whetta) is like light skinned/light hair-If I’m not mistaken. 
I lived in El Paso for 5 years and people used these terms to describe me all the time (friends, colleagues, strangers). I never took offense to it, but of course, I had to ask what they meant at first. 
It’s not racist, in my opinion.

It’s not racist.. gringo/gringa for us means white people.  Wero/wera means light skin people.   Even with us Latinos, if we see a light skinned Latino we call them wero(a).   
Us Latinos use nicknames for everyone and everything.. its not always right, but if we are comfortable with you we will give you a nickname.   My family calls me flaca (skinny) because I’m super skinny. 😂😅 lol.
