Question

Can someone give me a simplified version of what’s happening in US politics right now with Trump? (And in an easy to understand type of way?) and why it’s happening

The basics of the impeachment process are this: 1) The House of Representatives decides to start an inquiry. 2) The House Judiciary committee holds hearings and gather evidence to determine if the president has committed a crime. 3) If they determine that a crime has been committed they draw up articles of impeachment and send them to the full House. 4) The full House debates the impeachment and then votes on whether or not to impeach the president, that’s what happened yesterday. Trump has been impeached, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be removed from office, for that he needs to be convicted (similarly Clinton was impeached but not convicted and so he served the rest of his term). 5) The Speaker of the House sends the impeachment to the Senate, the Senate has the power to convict the president. 6) The Senate trial works much like a normal criminal trial. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides and the Senators act as jurors. If the 2/3 of the Senators find the president guilty, he is convicted and removed from office. That has never happened in American history and it is extremely unlikely to happen now.

The house voted to impeach Trump. Now it goes to the Senate, but they need 2/3 majority to oust him, and will likely acquit him since they are primarily Republicans. So, really he will be our president until the next election
