When filing taxes, if I dont work does my husband file joint or separate ?

I don’t work, we live off his income. This will be our first year being married and doing a tax return.

If one spouse works, you can still file married filing jointly because your total income will be split over two people instead of one, so you’d likely be in a lower tax bracket than if he filed married filing separately. It’s also an option to try it both ways to see which gives you the better benefit, but unless you as the nonworking spouse have specific things, like tons of medical expenses, there’s usually not a benefit to filing separately. I’ve been out of tax for a while, but I’m pretty sure if you’re legally married, your options are either married filing jointly or married filing separately. Head of household status is generally for single adults that have dependents (I.e. single parent with kids) and Single would be if you are only claiming yourself. Neither HoH or Single would be appropriate if you are legally married.
