SO vs. Boyfriend ?

What is the real difference between these two terms ?

SO is overused

Earlier today I saw a teen referring to her "boyfriend?" as SO and I was like WTF?

In my head I was like you  have been on 2 dates and he is your SO ?

To me a person is not your SO until there is a stable relationship, 
It's not when you are like just dating and seeing if things will go somewhere

Some of y'll might comment rudely by saying it's none of my business

I generally use SO here because our relationship feels too serious for "boyfriend" and I feel weird saying fiance until we get rings.  We are engaged technically and plan to get married early next year, but with a baby on the way rings haven't been a financial priority.  He also wants to talk with my dad and do all that old fashion stuff before it's official.

SO is not overused. It's a general term. SO could be husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, fiancé.

It's gender neutral, which I find appealing. Although I am married and will call my husband just that.

I definitely agree, to me I feel like the term "boyfriend/girlfriend" is more intended for high school maybe college, I feel like SO is more intended for a long term relationship or a mutual partnership. I have a coworker who has been with her guy for 15 years. I wouldn't  call him her boyfriend because that sounds childish. Idk just my opinion

I would never use the word significant other in person. I think people just find it easier than defining their relationship to strangers online.

My boyfriend (whom is in his 30's) is both my boyfriend and SO. It depends on who I am talking to which term I use.

You know the saying "You are only mature depending on who you are with?" That is me and my friends. I use SO around family because we have been together so long and I use boyfriend with my friends.

I'm a teen and say SO because technically he's my fiancé but I would much rather just say SO instead of fiancé or boyfriend
