Changing from nursery to toddler room

My son will be turning 1 in April. He has never liked a crib at all. He sleeps great in an actual bed. My parents are wanting to redo his nursery and get him a whole new toddler room for his birthday gift. Is that a good present? Would that be a good time to make that switch? I’m a FTM so I’m not really sure the time line on different things. I think he would do so much better sleeping in a big boy bed but not sure if that’s too early. Any advise is appreciated!
