Hand dominance?

Question

Is it possible for a baby to show hand preference early on? Being left handed runs in my family. My moms dad, my mom, and then me. My son obviously uses both hands to do stuff with as all babies do but he seems to prefer his left hand and will do a lot of stuff with his left hand. Pick up toys, rub, reach for things, etc.

I actually wrote my thesis on hand dominance and brain hemispheres. I really want to go into detail necajze i find it so interesting but I'm currently having my nipples bitten by a very angry 6 month old...so in short:
It's hard to say when children show hand dominance. Some experiments say that in the womb some fetuses show strong preference for the hand they use later in life. Others say until children learn to write, they don't show a hand dominance - however a lot of it is hard to define because if someone is dominant at using their left hand for other tasks (cutting food, using scissors etc) but writes with their right hand - they still get called right handed and therefore believe their dominant hand is their right hand. Which I guess is why literature is so contradictory.
It sounds like your baby will most probably be left handed though. When it comes to handedness - there's two genes, a right hand dominant gene and a not right hand dominant gene, no left hand dominant gene. We get 2 versions of handedness gene (1 from each parent) and most people are either 1 of each or have 2 right handed genes (I forgot the word. I want to say homogenized but I googled it and apparently that's not the right word). Those who show the non- handed gene almost always end up being right handed anyway though due to environmental factors. To me though it sounds like you and your family have 2 of the non-right handed gene, and have adapted to use your left hand. So there is a high chance your child will be left handed also.
My daughter has sucked on her left hand as early as her 10 week scan and seems to prefer using it to grasp objects, as well as when she's happy will kick her left leg. I'm really interested to see which hand she writes with as both me and my partner are right handed, but I use my left hand for everything else (as do 2 of my sisters) and 1 of my sister's is left handed.
Out of curiosity, does anyone in your family suffer with dyslexia?

I think my daughter is going to be left handed as well. I’ve been seeing the same patterns as you do. I have a twin who is left handed and was told at a young age of an old wives tale if you’re left handed you were/are a twin. Being a twin I always believed it, but know now it’s a wives tale as I know women who did IVF with only one egg and had very early scans and only had one babe who is left handed. 
My BIL is also left handed, so we have some lefties on both sides of the family.

I am not sure honestly, but Maddox tends to use his right hand more than his left. Like you said he uses both, but obviously shows a preference. So I’m following!

it's funny you write this because I'm in a rare situation.. my husband and I BOTH are lefties! I'm so curious to see what our son is. My husband is definitely more ambidextrous than me but still. His dad is left handed and my mom is too. 
Anyway, my son really seems to start with his right when grabbing and I'm going to laugh when he's super right dominant. Time will tell I guess!
