Which last name should a baby of unmarried parents have?

For instance a couple who have been together and lived together for almost 6 years are having a baby. The baby will already share the same middle name as the father. Who's last name should the baby take?

Living together and being in a relationship that long I'd say fathers or hyphenated... I'd also have the middle name something other then the fathers middle name if baby gets fathers last name.  In my family (and quite often in the Portuguese culture) married or not the baby generally gets the fathers last name and the middle name is mamas maiden name.

My son is a jr so he has his dad’s last name but I am carrying a girl and she will also get his last name. I do plan on marrying their dad down the line and he is a great guy that will be there no matter what so why not?
