Could my baby have autism?

I’m starting to get so worried. My son is not pointing, waving or clapping. I’ve been trying my hardest for months but nothing works. He’ll wave his arms in the air when he’s excited but not much else with his hands. He’ll be 1 in 1 month.

There’s no way of knowing until at the earliest at 18 months old. I was a behavioral technician and worked with children on the spectrum before I went on maternity leave, then eventually quit. To be clear, autistic or not you have to teach your baby how to do these things. Positive reinforcement is key! And because most babies do something at a certain age it’s not uncommon or a negative for your baby to do it weeks or months later. I wouldn’t have any serious concern until around 18 months.

Probably not. Every baby does these things at different ages. Autism really doesn’t become apparent until age 18 months.

The biggest warning signs are not making eye contact and not babbling. Autism is mostly related to communication and interaction with others. Please bring up your concerns at his 1 year appt though! Pediatricians are well versed in what to look for and will be more than happy to reassure or recommend observation if they feel that’s what’s necessary.

How is your babies motor skills? Does he walk? Crawl? They focus on different things at different times...
