Is toddler rapid weight gain a concern?
I’m just a little bit confused and could use some opinions. My daughter was born an average size, but quickly grew and has been above average height since she was a couple of month old, and she used to be really skinny. She’s been above 99% for height and around 25% for weight for her first year, then the same for height and around 50% for weight her second year. Since then she is gaining weight quiet rapidly. For her last checkup mid October she was 33.4 lbs, I weighed her yesterday and she was 38.5 lbs. That’s 5 lbs in less than 3 month! She is 40 inches tall, so she doesn’t even look chubby and has a healthy BMI, I’m just a little concerned about her weight gain, she’s now somewhere around 98% for weight. I’ve always heard they should stay around their growth curve, which she doesn’t, but I don’t know if this a concern.
She is very active, and eats a pretty healthy diet, loves whole grains, veggies, fruit, and lean protein. But she eats a lot! Today for breakfast she had two fried egg whites, a bowl of berries, a green smoothie, and whole grain toast with butter. Snack at preschool was cheese, pretzel sticks, guacamole, and a yogurt. Lunch was homemade chicken nuggets and two cups of raw tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots. Afternoon snack was grapes and half a green smoothie. Dinner was a few ounces of steak, baked French fries, white rice with beans and a salad. Oh, and one mini chocolate cookie for dessert 😉. I feel like that’s a lot of food, it’s more than I ate, but I’m not pushing it, she asks for it. So I’m not sure what to think. Should I bring it up with her pediatrician? Should I try to limit her food intake? Is that “normal”?
