Guy mad because I gave him space?

I’ve been talking to this guy for over a month now and things have been up and down because of his job, anyway, because of that I asked him if he still wants me to try and he said he thought I was done trying since we got into an disagreement prior to this upcoming situation due to his job. I disagreed and said I would just give him some space to cool off and think since he was unsure of him and I, sadly. So I let it be. Fast forward to the next day, he messaged me saying he was going to be in Greece for a few days that he would let me know about us when he got back. Once he got back he told me he had time to think and he said he missed me and wanted to be with me more than he originally thought. I didn’t know what to say because before leaving he had no clue and doubted our future together so it kind of turned my emotions off because I don’t want to get hurt by someone who doesn’t know what they want. The day after that I told him I had missed him too and he was doubtfully that I did because I gave him too much space and that someone who cares wouldn’t do that. Then I could tell he was mad about that and I asked if he wanted MORE space and he said “whatever” and got mad AGAIN. Can me giving him too much space be making the situation worse? Guys on here please help out, idk how this guys mind works, I’m so confused. Idk if he wants space or not:( thanks!
