Save the money. I told my husband that we don't need to celebrate fake holidays. Random acts of kindness and love throughout the year are more important than a day dictated by Hallmark. 
Maybe save up for a day of fun with just the two of you.

I don’t like receiving gifts, but it speaks to my SO’s love language so I try to surprise him with something, even if it’s a small gift.
Also, in Japan, Valentine’s Day is for girls to give gifts (usually chocolate, usually homemade) to boys—there’s a whole separate holiday (White Day, March 14) for boys to give gifts to girls. Totally a corporate money-making scheme and the exact opposite of what OP’s coworker seemed to think, but there are some parts of the world where Valentine’s Day is actually just for one gender 👯‍♀️ Just a fun fact for y’all 😊

If you want to get your man a gift then go for it! Just don’t get your hopes up of a return gift if you haven’t discussed that you guys are celebrating.
My husband and I have never celebrated Valentines Day. BUT we use to buy each other little gifts all the time when we first started dating. We sometimes buy clothes for each other at random, etc. 
So I don’t see what the big deal is.
