How would you respond?
I’m a black woman. I work in corporate America. Constantly I find myself being harassed about my hair. Daily, at least 5 times a day, I am greeted by white women, both peers and customers that inquire about my hair. Constant questions of “is it real? Is that all your hair? Can I touch it? Certainly your hair is fake right?” And sometimes, I’m asked “is that your real body? Are those your real eyes?” It drives me nuts. I’m the only black woman at this location. I am also the only person being interrogated on the daily about my natural features and genetics.
Today, a customer rudely shouts “is that all your hair?! Certainly it can’t be!” My response to her was “Why can’t it be? Because I’m black? How come every time you visit this location you inquire about my hair? You never ask the other girls whether or not their hair is real? Just me. And it’s quite rude might I add. It’s inappropriate and I don’t appreciate it. Furthermore, it’s absolutely none of your concern.” The woman then reaches over and attempts to touch my hair... the nerve. I stepped back and told her that I would not be assisting her today as I felt uncomfortable. Smh. She told me that I was rude in exchange. Again... the fucking nerve.
In my shoes, how would you respond to these questions? What would you do?
