In having a hard time figuring out this question. I even used the example and I'm still having a hard time. Please 😭😭

If you want to make it really line up nicely, you can make them both entirely into fraction form, subtract the numerators, and then convert them back from there. This way you don’t have to try to subtract two mixed numbers. If not helpful just go back to only converting the fractions :). Possibly easier to see how they subtract, but then you would have to put the answer to this back into a mixed number form.

Change it to the same denominator... the bottom number! The bottom numbers being 12 , and 9.  
Common denominator is 36
36 because 12 and 9 can BOTH go into it 
So 1/12 is now 3/36  because 12*3 = 36 (what you do to the bottom you do to the top 1*3= 3 and 8/9 is now 32 /36 because 9*4 = 36 and 8*4 =32 
69 3/36 - 66 32/36 =

Change the fractions so they have the same denominator, then subtract the son’s height from the dad’s height.
