Pregestational diabetes - suddenly uncontrolled!

Andrea

I was diagnosed diabetic 2 years ago, and have had really excellent control of my sugars pre-pregnancy. But since I've become pregnant it's like everything is different. I'm at 7 weeks right now. Things that I could eat with perfectly controlled sugars now all of the sudden spike me (like oatmeal!?). They switched me from Metformin to insulin (normal I think) and they told me to inject 5 units at bedtime with a snack, but I could adjust at meals or at bedtime if I felt it was necessary. Well, I'm definitely using well over 5 units at bedtime, and I still need to inject at breakfast and sometimes at dinner. I have a pretty healthy diet, cook at home, eat lots of veggies and protein, but it's still so hard to keep my sugar reasonable after eating (like I had one piece of whole grain toast with cashew butter, and I shot up to 200). And I still can't seem to have a fasting sugar under 110.

I keep reading about the potential birth defects and pregnancy complications for me and I'm starting to freak out. Any thoughts or advice on what I could try? Anyone else going through the same thing?
