Is it OK that I shouted at my neighbours dog?

My neighbours dogs are the worst. They bark at anything and everything. I sneezed once in our bathroom and they started barking at that. We can't do anything in our garden without them barking. I've literally stood there watching them barking and barking at nothing.
They bark all through the night as well.
Anyway, it's 23:45 and their dog has been barking non stop for half an hour. I got so annoyed I went outside and shouted at him. I went back inside and within two seconds he was barking again so I went back outside and shouted at him. The neighbours then put their outside light on, I guess maybe my shouting at their dog woke them up or something?
Either way, the dog has stopped barking now. But now I feel bad for shouting at him. But I mean a person can only take so much, especially when you often have to hear their dogs barking for in excess of 10+ minutes multiple times a day.
These neighbours are not very nice and friendly, I don't even have their number. They're the kind of people who let off fireworks (while their have their own dogs) during illegal times (in my country there are only certain days and certain hours where you can let them off), they fight outside where everyone can hear, etc.

Nothing I dislike more than a dog who barks for no reason. And this is coming from a person who loves dogs and is typically very tolerant of them.
People need to take responsibility and accountability for their dogs- that includes making sure they aren't a nuisance to the people around them. I've never understood how people can sleep through their dogs barking.
Anyway, my point is I get now you feel like a bad neighbour for shouting, but frankly they're bad neighbours for allowing the noise to carry on. And if this is a regular occurrence like you say, then I certainly wouldn't worry about loosing your cool once, late at night when I presume you're trying to sleep.

Call animal control. They’ll issue a ticket if your city has a noise ordinance. Record the barking at different times to use against them.

I get both sides of this. I get that if anyone heard my dog barking and yelled I’d be pissed but I also wouldn’t let my dog just bark. I’d talk to your neighbors first and document that you tried that and then if that doesn’t work I’d make a noise complaint and show that you’ve tried to talk to them.

I mean I would have had a few words with the neighbors instead of yelling at the dog but, it's not that big of a deal. They need to let their dog inside. That crap pisses me off to no end.

My neighbors used to do this band it literally has woke me up and prevented me from sleeping, I almost went to their door and cussed them out, if your dog is fkn barking, bring them inside!!

I think dogs bark "for no apparent reason" when they are anxious, or when they hear some other animals around. I have 2, the younger one is super anxious (was never abused in the past, got her as a puppy, but the smallest noise and she starts barking). If the dogs are in an unstable environment, maybe that's the problem. My older one hates cats, so at night when she hears cats she'll run out through the doggy door and bark up a storm. When it's cat mating season, she'll bark through the night. I sometimes get frustrated to the point of yelling, but that seldom helps. Maybe you can try reporting them for noise and I hope it doesn't deteriorate your relationship further.

I'm sorry but yelling at the dog will not help. Maybe be an adult and call animal control or talk to the neighbors? The dog just thinks you are barking back when you yell.

Take videos everytime they bark and make a police report. They might get charged if you have a lot of evidence of the barking

I’m not going to lie, my husband did this to our neighbours dog too. Our neighbours would let their dog out every night all last year around 7 pm and literally leave him out there until midnight. The dog would bark non stop while we were trying to get our kid to bed. We couldn’t even watch tv in our own living room because their dog would not shut up for hours on end. After putting up with this for months it became winter. It gets very cold where we live too so we didn’t understand why they wouldn’t let the dog inside. Finally my husband started going outside to see what the dog was doing. Their dog was literally on their deck every night barking to be let in! We started reporting it to the police and the humane society every day. My husband did grow frustrated a few times and go outside and yell at the dog to be quiet because no one at our neighbours house was doing anything about it. Finally after reporting it a handful of times it stopped happening. We figure they probably got sick of getting fined for their dog and started taking care of it better.
