Pregnancy?

Not that I'm scared about being pregnant, but the whole conceiving part confuses me. Two months ago, my boyfriend came in me but the next week I had my period and I'm on my period now. I was wondering why I wasn't pregnant, and how the whole conceiving thing works.

You can conceive at any point in your cycle. HOWEVER that's because sperm can live upwards of 7 days in your fallopian tubes. I mention those specifically because the vagina is too acidic for them, the cervical mucus can trap them, and your uterus is basically a giant mine field of white blood cells looking to jump on the sperm and destroy them.

Whereas your Ovum are released at some point, I'm not you so I have no idea when you ovulate, the ovum live for about 12-24 hours and if a sperm from let's say 8 days ago meets up with that ovum. You've officially got the first while diploid cell (whole cell consisting of the 46 chromosomes) of a new human.

BUT if the zygote (what it's called at this point) fails to implant in your endometrial lining and start creating the placenta, amniotic sac and neural tube that will become a baby then you'll end up with a period rather than a positive pregnancy test.

TTC can take upwards of a year for even optimally healthy couples!! My suggestion is to see your OB for a preconception check up, this step is often skipped. It's a check up that checks for hormonal imbalances, reproductive disorders or anything that might hinder conception. You also have the opportunity to create a fertility action plan. Like when you'll come in for more extensive testing, when/if you'll add in fertility medications like Clomid and diet modifications that you can try.

Usually you ovulate 2 weeks before you get your period. Which means the egg was already "dissolved" the week you had sex in protected.
