Getting baby back to sleep during night

My son stays awake at least an hour in the middle of the night. When I mentioned this to his doctor he seemed kind of surprised. He is 3 and a half weeks old. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone have any advice? I feel like I've tried it all but I can't figure out how to get him down sooner...
