Fast letdown makes baby cough

Hey BF mamas - anyone else have a fast/strong letdown that makes baby choke and cough? If so, what do you do to deal with it? My 3.5 week old has been struggling with my letdown since being a week old. It happens almost every time - she starts to cough and cry when letdown happens, or she ends up gulping a bunch of air and needs to stop to have a massive burp before wanting to nurse again. I always feel so bad 😞 Ive tried reclining back, but she doesn’t seem to like to nurse face down. I asked my lactation consultant about it and she didn’t seem concerned and told me when babies cough/choke on breast milk that it actually puts antibodies in their system (?)🤷🏻‍♀️ Which is great and all, but just wondering if/when we will be able to have a nice peaceful nursing session without coughing. Baby does have a “very mild” tongue tie, but the doctor and lactation consultant said it didn’t look like it’s impeding her tongue.

Try pumping or hand expressing just right past your letdown and then latch baby on, that should help!

Yeah I wouldn’t think. Especially if you give it to baby, then the get the same amount without asking your body for that extra you’ve already pumped.

Thanks - I’ll give this a try. I had been doing it when my milk first came in bc of engorgement, but then thought maybe I’d be signaling my body to make more milk. But if I just do it until after letdown that shouldn’t be much more signaling than just nursing, right? Worth a shot!

I’m dealing with the same thing! Have you tried nursing in the side lying position? It’s helped my little guy at night. There’s also something called blocking where you offer the boob that she fed from last (so it’s not as full) but I think you’re supposed to be careful with that because it could affect your supply. I’ve also been pulling him off when I have a letdown. He gets a little mad, but pops right back on and doesn’t end up choking.

I’ll try side lying at night more to see if that helps - thanks for the advice! I’ve read a little bit about block feeding, but saw where it said it could affect supply so haven’t tried it yet. Trying to just be more diligent about taking her off during letdown even though she gets mad!

Use a hakaa or hand express for a min or two before feeding. That being said I’m dealing with the same along with tons of painful gas, reflux and projectile vomiting in baby.

Thanks - I’ll try expressing a bit to see if that helps. And yes, even when she doesn’t choke, she ends up having bad gas too. Seriously the most massive burps and toots I’ve heard in a baby this small 😅 Hope it gets easier for you and baby as well.
