My brother did a destination wedding it was a pain in the ass all around.  One he didn’t do any of the planning for it but expected others to do it for him than everyone had to pay to get there and stay. Was no cheap. So I couldn’t give him a good gift because so much had to go to being able to go.  ￼￼

As a guest, I would not go to a destination wedding unless I was EXTREMELY close to the couple.

Only because you’re asking, destination  weddings are an expensive pain in the ass for both you and your guests, when you consider that weddings are ultimately just a big and expensive party to celebrate a couple. This is coming from someone who is married and had an unintentional destination wedding; I had to fly to my hometown to have it because my family is unable to travel due to their outrageous animal hoarding. I wanted to have a wedding where I currently live, but none of my family would’ve been there which would’ve rendered it pointless. Albeit always a great time, financial reasons and taking time off of work (which means losing more money) are the least appealing things about having one or attending one. No one will say it out of excitement for the person having a destination wedding, but unless someone is making a vacation out of their time, it’s really hard for people to afford it (especially if you’re at an age where everyone you know has kids; the thought of planning and flying with my son whenever that happens, just for a wedding, is now stressful). I love my friends but groan over destination and December wedding invitations, but I do it anyway. Just my two cents. Perhaps not the right attitude to have, but I’ve lost count of how many weddings I’ve been to and the fact I had to fly for my own gives me a little room to say nay about them. Like I said, I do it regardless. I just don’t prefer it.

It really depends on what you consider "destination." If you live in the same city you grew up in and all your friends and family are still there, then I think it makes the most sense to have your wedding in your hometown. When I got married my husband and I lived in California, but our parents were in another state, extended family all over the country and some outside the country. Honestly no matter where we chose to have our wedding it was going to be a "destination" for a lot of people. I think get married where it will be most convenient for you and your immediate family, and go on a destination honeymoon.

My husband and I rented a hall, right down the street from our house. We paid 300$ and $100 of the was refundable. We bought the decorations, beer, and drinks, food, cake, everything ourselves. My mom made the food, and some family members brought their own stuff that they made! It was definitely like a buffet style. I bought all my decorations at Walmart, my cake at sams club, all in all for our outfits and licenses and stuff, we paid a little over 1000$ for the whole wedding. I wouldn’t change it for anything because it was quiet, laidback and all in all just perfect for us.

I am eloping with my partner. We are going away for the weekend and not telling anyone. We are doing it this way because we have a million other things we would prefer to spend the money on and I feel that we are too old for silly wedding nonsense (we are each 36). Don’t get me wrong I love weddings but I think the big hometown wedding is basically for people who are 25 and under. So I would go with destination.
