Ingrown toenail or...?

Question

So I try to be very gentle when cutting my daughter's nails, but I noticed her toe was really gross looking today. It had some skin falling off of it and a crusty spot. Both of which came off before I took this picture. Is it an ingrown toenail? If so what can I do for it? If it isn't an ingrown toenail, what is it. Thanks in advanced!

We are having this problem too! Apparently it’s fairly common. Our friend is a doctor and he said it’s fine to put kids polysporin and a bandaid over it to help the mild infection, as long as baby is in a full one piece sleeper and they can’t access their foot (wouldn’t want them to ingest the polysporin or swallow the bandaid!)  He also suggested that we let the toenail grow a bit longer to help try to recorrect itself. So far this advice has worked great for us!

When my son was a crawler he'd get ingrown nails. His would get very swollen and red. The skin would peel once it started to heal.
