I don’t know what to do.

My birthday was in December, and my boyfriend didn’t get me anything.

Or the year before.

I’ve pulled through and gotten him around $120 worth of presents every year for his birthday.

I asked his mum what I should get him and she said “nothing, return the sentiment. I don’t think it’s nice he let himself run out of money from buying food for himself and not your present”.

We’re 19 and 20, been dating for almost 3 years.

I don’t know what to do, part of me wants to get him something of course but at the same time he never puts in effort for me in the act of gift giving so why should I?

He’s a great boyfriend but present giving on someone’s birthday is an act of kindness and a chance to let the person you love know you care about them and know their interests in a different way than everyday acts of service.
