or anyone who knows anything about what rights a stepparent can have to a child??
A child who they’ve been the only mom to since the child was 20 months old and the child is turning 4 in a month. BM isn’t in the picture...

None....it's up to the parent to have custody and then the step parent can adopt if mother gives up her rights.

While most child custody is a federal law in Canada there is also provincial law. Your best bet would be to ask a family court house near you.

You would have to apply to adopt them and the birth parents I believe would have to give up their rights. One of my friends was with a woman who ended up developing serious drug problems. She had a child already when they met and the child’s biological father wasn’t involved. They ended up having a child together and then split up and the dad took their child and applied to the courts to adopt her child as well. He ended up getting full custody of both of them and adopting the older one and has had them both for years now. It’s definitely possible but i believe it would only be done in serious situations where the other parent was not fit. The only way to know for sure would be to contact a lawyer.
