Okay, so silly question but I’ve got nowhere else to ask- is it possible to adopt an animal (from a shelter) that is in a different state than you live in?

I live in a very “hippy” state where a lot of the shelters are no-kill, thank god. I’d love nothing more than to add another rescue baby to our family but would love to do so from a shelter with high turnover rates. I’m all about saving lives! So If I can take a weekend trip down to this state, would they let me adopt from them?
