My daughter is in 6th grade and she came home Friday really mad because the kids were making fun of her name and calling it ghetto. Her name is Na'Kiyah. People are still unaware that "ghetto" black American names are actually derived from Africa, so it seems. Middle school is cruel in general though. I tried telling her that and that there's nothing wrong or unusual with her name but she wants it changed and she's just really upset. She's barely coming out of her room and I don't know how I can make her feel better at all.
