You never know what someone is going through, and it can be hard to open up to people, especially family. And someone must be in a pretty desperate situation to do that.

I would forgive them for myself. It’s not healthy to hold onto anger. 
Would they ever be allowed back in my home? Absolutely not. 
Would they probably be arrested? Yes, especially since it would be considered grand theft in my state. You don’t steal and think you can get away with it. I don’t care if you’re family or not. 
My child’s piggy bank is hard to access. They would have to know the key code to get into his closet and his room. Only my husband and I know that. All of our doors have key code locking doors to prevent access. Family and guests aren’t allowed upstairs anyway. 
There are 2 guest bathrooms downstairs.
