I had a few toxic relationships, then finally took ownership of my part in it and why I was choosing these partners. I had to work on myself and my self esteem and boundaries. I was excusing being mistreated for "love" or even just thinking that my expectations were too high and unrealistic. Once I worked on myself and realized I'll be okay on my own, better to be a little lonely than to invest in someone who mistreats me, I eventually met my now husband of 8.5 years.

All I can say is my relationship started out toxic 9 years ago, cheating lies and of course I stayed. Got married 3 years ago and also have two kids and a step son but I love my step son and my kids so much don’t regret them at all. But I finally got the courage to leave and divorce will be finalized next week. It’s hard and a lot of feelings and emotions went with it.

We were both toxic - I was with him basically because of the sex and he made bomb food and was a great musician but he was kind of an asshole, huge ego, my family hated him because of how smug he was. He wrote out a list of “rules” for me to follow and I don’t play that, but we still stayed together for a little while. Constantly fighting and having sex lol. I’ve been toxic before. Knew how to push his buttons and did just that, just to play victim. I’ve changed. Especially with my husband of 9 yrs. The first time I tried it he put me straight. I needed that.

High school. Best friend quickly turned into a very emotionally manipulative and verbally abusive influence who tried to pressure me into all sorts of crap I wasn’t comfortable with (from kissing to trying to get me to sneak out of my parents house to trying to force me to be his girlfriend and spreading all sorts of rumors about me), kept pushing boundaries I drew, etc. I let everything slide in the name of being a good friend, never realized how messed up it was until I moved away for college. I learned it’s not normal for someone to criticize you with dozens of things you’re not good enough in, it’s not normal to have someone repeatedly try to pressure you to do things you’re not comfortable with or isolate you from your friends or break you down. In hindsight, he was trying to force me to become who he wanted me to be, and I just wasn’t the person he fantasizes I was. It was twisted and wrong and a lot happened that I wish I’d had the understanding to prevent, but I was young and it all happened so gradually I never saw the switch. 
If you think you may be in a toxic relationship, get out now. I remember crying because I thought I had no choice but to grow up and marry this bag of garbage. I still have some trust issues but I’m married to someone who tries his very best to make me feel loved for who I am and has no expectation for me to change for him. Please leave before you lose everything you are♥️

My first two serious relationships were toxic but in very different ways.
My first ex.. met him when I was 15 and we were together for almost 2.5 years. He was “super religious” and I went to church every Sunday with him to make him happy even though I wasn’t. He of course though, still wanted blowjobs and handjobs all the time but no sex and nothing for me. He broke up with me when I was 17, middle of my senior year out of the blue. I had started finding my voice and becoming more myself, which included getting a tattoo on my foot (memorial for my gma) and his mom was disgusted. A week later he broke up with me. Coincidence? I think not. 
My second ex.. was my best friend’s cousin that was just supposed to be my prom date because of ex #1 dumping me. We were acquaintances but hit it off fast. He pushed me to become more myself at first. Never take any shit, have fun, let loose, don’t change for people. It was actually great for a while and I loved him. Lost my virginity to him. But I found out he had developed a drug problem after about a year of dating. At first it was just pot, then spice and god knows what else. We were on/off for another year before I realized I had done it again. Changed and let some guy walk all over how I felt because I loved him. And then I chose to love myself first. 
My now husband is amazing and has been ever since we started dating. I’m so thankful for him.
