How did you teach your baby to fall asleep on their own?

Nothing I’ve tried is working so far! 😫 For those of you whose babies fall asleep independently- how did you teach them to?

We have a routine, pjs, eat, book, I put him in his crib and sing one song and then turn off the lights and sing one more with my hand on his chest/belly. 
We started with the same routine and putting him in the crib awake and gently rocking his body with my hand until he fell asleep or was super drowsy and close to sleeping. We did that for a couple months and it’s only been the last 7 nights (8 tonight!) he’s putting himself to sleep. The first night it took 26 minutes, but no crying. The shortest was 6 minutes.

For bedtime for two months we did feed, bathe, book then feed to sleep.  Eventually we changed it from feed to sleep to feed until drowsy.  Then she started putting herself to sleep.  We also moved up her bedtime so she wasn’t overtired
