Miscarriage options that I learned after-the-fact
I am posting today because i had a frustrating experience with my miscarriage. After waiting for it to happen naturally for almost 4 weeks (heart rate stopped at 7weeks), i decided to have my D&C this morning so that i could move on with my life.
I am 38 years old so I am on the older side. I got pregnant the two times we tried, but both ended in early miscarriages (first was a chemical).
After the procedure today, my doctor called me and asked if I wanted the tissue analyzed for any chromosome abnormalities. That could help us identify what might be causing the miscarriages. So of course i wanted it tested! I didn’t know this was an option when i was weighing the decisions of (1) let miscarriage happen naturally (2) take the medications in the comfort of my own home but be in pain for a few days (3) D&C at the doctors office with just oral pain meds, which sounded painful (4) D&C in the operating room with general anesthesia.
My doctor also shared that because she performed the operation with an ultrasound, she was able to minimize the tools she used and could confirm with certainty that she removed all of the tissue and minimized the possibility of uterine scarring. If i got it done by her in her office, she would have only done it “by feel” and would not be certain that all tissue was removed.
I like my doctor, but these pros and cons should have been shared explicitly when i asked for her recommendation. Sharing with you all in case it’s helpful!
