Is there a difference between white people fake tanning and black people skin bleaching?

I always thought it was the same because both are unhappy with their skin color. I made a comment about this on Facebook. They were bashing a white girl for using darker makeup all over her face and body. someone replied to me very angry because Black people are actually pressured into doing it. I understand her point now and I was ignorant before. Just curious what you think?

I don’t think it’s the same at all. Skin bleaching can literally be toxic. People were murdered, dehumanized and sold for darker skin. White people applying makeup or lotion to look “sunkissed” and “tan” is not at all comparable to someone feeling societal pressure to bleach their skin due to being told they’re less worthy and valuable.

From a cultural perspective one is for profit and one is for pressure so yes not comparable especially what my ppl have to go through and get treated

I see your point, but you have to look at the broader societal implications. 
For tanning, there’s a big difference between adding a little fake glow to ones skin, which could be unhappiness or just preference, and caking it on so thick it’s edging up on blackface and appropriation. That’s a problem because if both the history, and the fact that it’s exploitative. (Think Rachel Dolezal for an extreme example). 
With skin bleaching it’s built upon the idea that black/dark skin is unacceptable. That it’s ugly, and needs to be corrected. That people need to assimilate and conform to white European beauty standards. None of those messages are inherent with tanning.

Big difference. Skin bleaching is dangerous and harmful and usually due to societal pressures and expectations of beauty. Tanning isnt (with rare exeptions) about trying to achieve a black or darker tone to assume an identity of a POC, it's more of trying to get a healthy (good bloodflow, youth, etc) color or to hide unevenness or patchiness in skin.

It’s not the same. Even though I’ve never felt like I needed to bleach my skin, but I was made to feel like an outsider because of it by my own community. 
Everyone’s skin is beautiful no matter what race they are.

They are both self harming in my opinion. It's like voting for a president, our only options are shit or diarrhea (more shit). Tanning is cancerous and bleaching is cancerous. Guess it depends on what your pedantic meaning of certain words are as usual.
