Birth Control and daily meds
Hey all, I am actually 6 weeks and two days pregnant as of today, but I have a super common story that I wanted to share especially for anyone else who might be taking the same medication that I am and they are also taking birth control daily as well. So a little while after I started to suspect that I might be pregnant I did some research on the medication I take, and how this all started basically I started my period when I was in 4th grade and I was infertile my whole life and I didn’t even know it until I got genetic testing done, I have a super common MTHFR or folic acid deficiency I was functioning on less than 25% folate which means that even if I wanted to get pregnant my body couldn’t sustain a pregnancy, but after I started taking
L-methylfolate it could, and now is where the medications come in, online it says that some medications and very commonly “Anticonvulsants” can cause birth control (at least the pill) to cancel out or worst case scenario it cancels both medications out, I am taking LamoTRIgen which is the the generic form of Lamictol typically used for seizures, a mood stabilizing medication, or bipolar disorder, and it created a perfect storm. The lamoTRIgen canceled out my birth control making it completely
ineffective and my folate levels were up enough to support a viable pregnancy. I don’t personally know any other women or teenagers who take that particular drug but I am very excited to have my baby in October, and just wanted to share my story in case anyone with a similar situation or looking to prevent what happened to me from happening to them, because my doctor did not brief me on that side effect and she knew I was taking birth control with my four other medications which have all been marked as safe. And just another antidote that I was told my my doctor and OB, yes lamictol interacts with BC but depending on what dosage you’re on (I’m in the lowest possible) as long as you are stable and no one messes with the dosage and you take it properly there is really no current evidence that it will harm or affect your pregnancy.
