Too scared!!

Ok so I am absolutely terrified of giving birth and it’s right around the corner for me (I’m 38+3). Im having a vaginal birth but one thing I’m so scared of is something going wrong and I need an emergency c-section. I don’t want to be put to sleep! Do they always put you to sleep for an emergency c-section or not? It’s literally the worst thing for me!

I’m scared of loads of other things too but that’s one thing I seriously don’t want to happen I will actually freak out!

So yeah that’s my question - if you have to have an emergency c-section, do they always put you to sleep for it?

I’ve never heard of anybody being put to sleep for an emergency c section, they give you a spinal block epidural so you can’t feel anything waist down and put a screen up so you can’t see x

No they definitely don't always put you to sleep. Have you tried 'watching one born every minute' ? They often show c sections on there and most of the time the mum is awake and there is a screen covering the lower half. It depends on the reason for the c section.

No they don't usually put you to sleep for an emergency C-section unless it's is absolutely necessary to get baby out asap. I believe it's something like less than 15% emergency C-sections in UK need it. My emergency C-section was because baby's heart wasn't looking great. They had plenty of time to get me to theater, give me a spinal and then get baby out. The only person I know who was put to sleep for her C-section was because they didn't have time, they only had minutes to get baby out. She had gone in for a scan and they realised there was a problem so took her straight to theater.

No they usually don’t put you to sleep , they used to years and years ago but not anymore unless it is completely necessary.I had an emergency csection and honestly it was fine I’d already had an epidural during labour so was numb. They just topped it up made sure I was comfortable and within less then an hour I was in the recovery room with my LO.I was terrified before having my LO Of needing an emergency csection but when it happened I was calm throughout and it really didn’t bother me. It’s strange how differently you react when it actually happens.Good luck with the birth of your baby!!

Look up hypnobirthing breathing techniques on YouTube... will calm you down and focus with each contraction. Even if it is just deep breath in and out, its controlled breathing that helps.

From what I recall from my nhs class 3 years ago, an emergency c-section you are awake for and partner is there with you. If it's really really serious (like life threatening) then they may do a crash c-section, which is where you are knocked out. Very rare so try not to worry about it xx
