Alpha-fetoprotein test?

He ladies. I was told at my next appt I would need to get done the Alpha-fetoprotein test done but I never had it done for my first baby. I was reading i can opt out but then I was reading I can’t opt out. It’s usually done with women over 35 and I’m 36.  Are any of you having it done or have had it done previously? I’m very nervous. I had the genetic testing done and results were negative. I had the fluid levels checked and baby has been good.

During which appt (how far along) is this typically recommended? I don't remember if I had it with my first kid!

At my first appointment they had me sign a paper with my decision to do the AFP or Quad screen or opt out. I agreed to take it and got my order yesterday with instructions not to do it until I hit 16 weeks, which will be next week. I see my OB again on Wednesday (been going every Wednesday as they are trying to adjust my insulin levels to get my diabetes in check) and will get the labs done the next day as there won’t be time between getting off work and going to my appointment because the labs here get backed up as we have a lot of winter residents and not enough staff at the lab. 🤦🏻‍♀️ but I’m off Thursday so will get it done then ☺️

I’m only 24 and my doctor strongly recommended it to me so I got it done today. I opted out of the first trimester screening because Down syndrome wasn’t a concern to me. The AFP test is testing for neural tube defects and spina bifida so doctors really tend to recommend it because these are serious issues. 
You can opt out from what I know. I live in New York and the test is completely optional but strongly recommended for all mamas
