Me and my husband are thinking about going ahead and saving up money for when we decide to TTC has anyone else done this? How much should you save

The immediate short term costs aren’t necessarily that much - aside from healthcare costs from birth itself - but you will want to start saving and earning interest for bigger picture costs related to child care, education, college, etc.

To start you should save any lost income while you are out with the baby if possible. And then some more to actually buy stuff for the baby. Maybe some money got medical bills if you can. 
If you plan to stay at home, it would be good of you to start adjusting your lifestyle now and save everyone you can.

We didn't save anything for having the baby, but we started a savings account for the baby while pregnant.

Yes, ideally you should. You don't have to have millions in the bank but you should have something for a rainy day. You never know what expenses are doing to come up.
