Tips to stop cravings while dieting?

I have heard to just drink a ton of water. But drinking water has never really stopped me from craving things...and I never just crave just one type of thing, it changes all the time. Carbs, soda, salt, sugar, etc.

It should be as simple as just not eating/drinking what ever it is that I start craving, right?

Sometimes it gets so bad I literally cant take my mind off of said craving.

How can I stop this from happening so I can maintain myself control?

I really want and need to lose weight.
