Car seat transition 1 year old?

My son is currently a year and almost 3 months. He weighs 20 pounds and sits in Britax infant car seat. He is starting to outgrow it as his feet are starting to poke out already. Besides the fact that I feel he's always hated his car seat because he cries every time we put him in it, he tries to lift his head to poke out and look out the window lol. Is there a seat that I can transition him to in where he's sitting more upright? Or is it too soon? Yes I'd like to keep him rear facing.
