When and how to transition to sippy cup?

I read online you can start at 6 months but when I mentioned it to my sons doctor at 6 months he looked at me like I was crazy... 
My son is almost 8 months now. He is bottlefed. When and how did you start the transition to a sippy cup? I wanted to start earlier than 12 mouths because I think it would be easier to do it earlier before they build a strong attachment.
Any advice appreciated :)

My first daughter learned how to drink out of a straw at 4 months. Then a developmental specialist came over to observe her at about 5-6 months and asked if she was drinking out of a sippy cup yet and I said no and she looked at me like I was crazy and told me to get one and give it to her. She drank just fine. Then the lady came back at 8 months and asked if she could drink out of a regular cup, like a solo cup for example with no straw, and I said I’ve never tried. Once again got the crazy look, told me to get one, and she did it perfectly. My second child started sippy cups at 6 months because she crawled over to my oldest’s sippy cup and snatched it from her and drank it lol.

Also do not feel bad if your child doesn’t take to the sippy cup right away. It took my son 6 months and trying several different cups for him to find the one he liked. He was on a bottle until his first birthday!

My son started using one at 6 months as it’s recommended to give them sips of water with their solids. He’s now 7.5 months and I’ve just introduced the 360 cups which he’s using it fine 😊

You can start with a sippy or open cup now as they should ideally be off bottles by 12 months. My baby is has been drinking from a small open cup from about 8 months with a little jelp:) x

We starting giving the sippy cup at 6 months. My daughter never took a bottle so I was desperate lol but she learned quickly. I don’t see the harm is starting that young

Whenever you feel the opportunity presents itself mama- only you know your child. Personally, I let my son open presents on his first birthday and some of them were some 360 sippy cups, and we started on his birthday using nothing those... and I put away all of the bottles and never looked back.
