Home birth...why does it seem so complicated?!

I’ve decided to do a homebirth. I’m so excited, as is my husband, but our insurance has been awful to work with and no one will write us a referral to even consider getting any of this covered by insurance! 
Anyone experiencing these frustrations? Any advice for future insurance that would be better? Looking into Christian Health Ministries or one of those Christian insurance options...

Finding a midwife first is important. Once you have one, then You tell you pcp (who doesn’t delivery babies) that you intend to see this particular person. They don’t need to hear the word “home birth”, just the person you are intending to use for birth.  Since they are out of network, ask for a referral. Leave it at that. Having someone who is friendly and supportive of homebirth is nice, but if no one is, 🤷🏻‍♀️. I do not ask my obgyn for the referral. If I thought they were actually friendly toward home birth I would, but I just don’t trust my obgyn so I would take it to my pcp. Or that is what I will be doing very soon, this week actually.

I’ve heard those Christian insurance plans are really not very good. I work with medical providers and they don’t really support them and view them as predatory. In the end the coverage is not good and you pay a lot out of pocket.
In Salt Lake City, where I live, you can get a private certified nurse midwife for a home birth and all prenatal visits for around $5,000. Some of these midwives do birth center births and others do home births. It’s not cheap but maybe you could get on a payment plan. Just make sure they are certified nurse midwives.

My insurance didn’t cover homebirth, but paying my midwife outright actually cost much less than what it would have cost to pay hospital bills with insurance. I paid around $3000 in Ohio, but I know it varies from state to state. Find a midwife you really love and see if she can work out a payment plan with you! My homebirth was amazing and if I ever decide to have any more babies, I will 100% go that route again. Good luck and congrats! ♥️

Liability reasons. They dont want you or your husband/family to sue them if something happens during a home birth. 
Trust me. It's all about money and them needing to cover their ass incase things go sideways

Insurance often won’t cover home births because they aren’t legitimate medical care.

You ja VE to be basically absolutley sure, your baby is totally normal and fine in the womb. Like if tou have placenta previa or a risk of preeclampsia or... Then it is wise to go to a hospital... Insurance don't want to covet it for the same reasons. It is dangerous to not have fast moving help around.
