Your role will change to something more like a counselor or sounding board rather than having authority over them. So you can be more like friends in a lot of ways, but please remember not to overburden them with your troubles even as they turn 20 and 30. You’re still the parent even when they’re adults. Someday they may be your caretaker and your roles will be reversed from their childhood, but in the meantime make sure you cultivate close friendships outside of the relationships with your children.

Yeah. Its not going to change over night but your relationship can change. I'm in my late 20s and have more of a friend relationship with my parents. Not quite the same as other friends. I still go to them for help and advice in a different way than other friends. But our relationships slowly changed over the years

My uncle started treating my cousin like he was his friend and not his kid when he turned 17/18, and then my cousin got arrested for racing with his friends because my uncle allowed him to use the car at 3 am and go out with his pothead friends. It went back to parent-kid relationship automatically lol.

My stepsons grandma has friend type relationship with her kids. And they walk all over her. They're grown with kids of their own and she takes care of their kids, sends them money when they ask for it (they refuse to get jobs) pays their bills and when they get evicted they move in with her. We had to deal with this for 2 years when we moved down to be with my boyfriends son. We got tired of it and moved back home with my step son.
