Strained relationship with inlaws

Anyone has super strained relationship with inlaws where u haven't spoken for 3 years?mine is so bad that they don't know about my father being no more or me having a daughter who was just born last month. There is absolutely no contact. It's really sad but I guess we can't have it all. Just wondering if we are the only ones or it's more common than I think. My MIL is a complete psycho and FIL can't think for himself and supports his crazy wife which is what triggered everything.
