When are contractions real?

I’m having the feeling of starting my period but it’s not exactly a cramping feeling. My stomach isn’t tightening. Is this still a contraction? I’m 39 weeks.

My contractions felt like Braxton Hicks. I had them starting at 24 weeks and they just kept getting stronger the further along I got. At 38 weeks I just thought I was having intense ones but these I had to breathe through. I was expecting contractions to hurt so bad but I was 4cm by the time I got to the hospital and I was like oh this is it? lol. just a really intense tightening
