36 TTC..Feeling dismissed by OBGYN?

Hi Ladies. Ok a little backstory.

I'm 36 been TTC for 6 cycles now. Have 2 children 17 and 13 years old. Had 2 IUD's and came off BCP'S in October and have been trying since then.

Recently I reached out to my OBGYN to ask her if I could make an appt just for some basic blood work to just see where my hormone levels are at. (I have regular periods but have been ovulating early)

Without hesitation she told me I need to contact a reproductive endocrinologist for a consultation! I'm like wait wait hold on, I just want the BASICS done before I go that route. To me it felt dismissive like she didn't want to do a basic blood test and for her to say that right off the bat scared the crap outta me to be honest. It felt like without her seeing any blood work numbers she just wanted to pass me off to an RE for <a href="https://glowing.com/glow-fertility-program">IUI</a> or <a href="https://glowing.com/glow-fertility-program">IVF</a>......

Anyone else experience this or have any insight?

Ask your pcp. They can run basic tests. AMH tells you your egg counts over time, 1.0 to 4.0 is normal... I would start there... 6 cycles isn't really crazy though at 36. I tried for 3 years,  all be it not consistently before I had no3 at 34 then no4 was a year later at 35...🙃

I suspect it is because it is standard practice that 35 and over and if youbhavrmt conceived in at least 6 mo of trying they refer you to a fertility specialist. You should be able to get a progesterone test for one week after ovulation, through the GP or ob, tho...

Can you local gp just do the blood wprk request. I'm in Australia and mine would in a heartbeat!

Maybe her office doesn’t know how to address the issues or would prefer you go straight to a fertility specialist so that you’re with them from the beginning instead of after the results come in. 
I get that it’s scary but personally I would have been grateful she sent me straight over to a specialist. Because they will be able to not only run the tests but give you the solutions once you get the results. In my mind she’s saving you time and stress because once you get the results you will already been a client and can immediately schedule appointments to address the results rather then waiting on that downtime between results and finding a place to make an appointment.

Often the RE wants very specific labs and may make you repeat. Its CD2-3 US and blood work. Sometimes CD21 (1 week psot ovulation blood work) for progesterone. Inwould go for RE consult if I were you. I went last year October.

I’m in the same boat (my kids are 16&11) except I need a new referral to see an obgyn everytime there’s a new issue. I have been ttc for 9 months. The original obgyn I was seeing is going on maternity leave and then closing her practice and moving to another city (6hours away) I was referred to her in November for some potentially scary cervical polyps and have gotten nowhere. Only reason I know she’s leaving her practice is that I’m a nurse and I work in a clinic and her office sent out a memo🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m sorry that you’re feeling like your getting pushed around. Feels like they think us older ladies are freaking dinosaurs 😭 When I was married to my ex and was “so much younger” it was such a non issue to get pregnant. Good luck to you my dear. Baby dust♥️♥️
