Staying with a cheater?

So I always told myself if someone cheated on me... I wouldn’t stay with them. 
Well, I ended up staying with my boyfriend after he cheated. 
This was almost 2 years ago now when we were in college. We are both young professionals now. Love together, have 2 dogs, the whole ordeal. 
From time to time I get really upset thinking about what happened. It’s been less and less frequently as he’s been slowly building the trust back.
My question is... those of you that have stayed with someone who cheated and thought that they genuinely changed. Do you ever stop thinking about it? Or does it haunt you the entire relationship?

My SO, years ago when we were together for about a year, i caught him talking to someone on Instagram. flirting and what not. I woke him up at 3am after i had loaded his clothes in his car and made him leave. we took some time apart. he slept in his car in the middle of the winter that night. we werent okay. we hadnt been okay long before that happened. we decided to try again. and I was young and now I wouldnt make the same choice, but id never ever regret it. we have a wonderful life. he sint the same person. Neither am I.

With time you do actually let it go and stop thinking about it as much but it takes years. As long as the guy doesn’t continue with his cheating ways and demonstrates his openness and truthfulness with you, you can get over it.

my boyfriend cheated on me about a month ago the day after we hung out. he promised me he would marry me that same day and the cheated on me with my ex stepsister. he broke up with me and the we got back together a couple days later, he begged me to trust him and it took about a month for him to give up on me. the other day he broke up with me again and started dating a new girl that he doesn’t even like. while we were dating the past month almost every day i would cry about it and he would keep telling me he would never leave me ever again because he could hurt me again. i’m still in pain.
