What is the role of a god parent

So my friend is pregnant and has made me Godmother but I actually have no idea what I’m supposed to do lol. Am I supposed to buy gifts or something, be there at the birth? Help pleaseee

Traditionally, a godparent is to help keep the child following the path of God.  You would be there for the baptism and likely gift biblical items such as a child's bible, prayer books...
But im seeing more people move the role into the persons that take the child should death come to the parents. 
There is zero harm in asking your friend what her expectations for your role is. When we asked our sons Godparents to be such, they straight out asked what our wishes were for them to follow.

To be a good mentor to the child. And if the worse happened and the parents couldn't be there (dead or incarcerated) you would stepup go claim the child.

I have 8 god children ages 22-9 and i have been there since birth...Im there for there Birthdays, Christmas, Prom and every holiday there is. I have a strong bond with all my babies and that depends on us as their god parent. (God forbid their parents die) i will be there to take care of them and love them as my own children.

Godparents are meant to be a "spiritual guide" for the child. That's it. Basically just have a vested interest in their upbringing. No legality or anything involved.

I think that’s something you should talk to her about. It means different things to different people. In my family, your godparent acts as a mentor and a religious guide. Some people say the godparent is who gets the baby if both parents are incapable of being caretakers, but I have never known anyone to actually make that legal. And many people designate different godparents to each of their children and it wouldn’t make sense to split the children all up. More than likely, your role as a godparent will be to be a mentor to the child. Like the special aunt lol. But I’d talk to her about it just to get some clarity!

I feel like it's sort of an aunt type role. Give them nice gifts, be there for important dates. Give advice, love them.
