Weird bleeding

I have had a weird stringy brown discharge. I had it about a week before my last period, and then I had it when my expected period was supposed to happen. I’m very concerned as I do not want to be pregnant. I am on the pill. I also took a pregnancy test after the last period but it was negative. I will be taking another later but I’m just very confused. Any ideas?
