Bank debt?

Okay so I know this is probably a really stupid question but I’ve tried googling it and It definitely has nothing to do with pregnancy and there’s a lot of other things to worry about right now but I need some answers and this site is the only site I seem to get answers off of.

So I’ve never had debt before. But my debit card went into overdraft awhile ago, like almost a year ago. But I had just moved and quit my job and me and my fiancé had found out we’re pregnant and Then the virus hit and I couldn’t get a job being pregnant and during the virus.

It only went into overdraft about $200. But with the $1200 stimulus checks and tax refunds, if deposited into my bank account, would still leave me with $1000, plus my tax return.

So where does the extra $1000 (+tax return) go?

My bank has probably closed my account already but I know that being in debt, the bank will take first dibs on any deposit I get to pay off whatever I owe.

But with my bank account closed, how do I get that money I don’t owe? Do I talk to my bank and get it all taken out and use cash or open a new bank account? Or will the bank keep that couple thousand dollars and reopen my account?

I’ve called my bank and they told me that they’ll take whatever money I owe and pay off the debt, but they didn’t explain to me anything about what happens after my debt has been cleared. Since my account is closed, I’m assuming i can’t just use that bank anymore to go about my purchases.

Has anyone had a situation like this or could explain to me how I get that money after my debt gets paid off?
