TW: child death. What would you do?
Was skimming through Pinterest and came across a list of awful MIL’s. Most of them were the general “hates me, ruined my wedding, tries to steal my SO’s attention, etc”. But one was a woman who’s MIL had accidentally killed her 2 year old.
Parents had left her to babysit and went to their respective jobs. MIL played with girl down by the pond, then realized she forgot laundry in the washer so left 2 year old to switch laundry. Little girl loved baths and water so went into the water and drowned. MIL came back too late, tried to resuscitate with neighbor helping, called ambulance, etc.
When parents got called, they called police even though MIL was trying to get them not to, saying it was an accident, wouldn’t bring her back, etc.
MIL got charged and sentenced to 3 years in prison, parents never visited or had contact. In courtroom, the dad had said he didn’t have a mother anymore. When she got out, she tried to reach out, but they didn’t respond, so she stalked them and found out that they’d had another baby who was 9 months old. She never asked for forgiveness and kept giving excuses, but wanted to be a grandmother to the new baby and babysit often. Parents were 100% against her ever seeing the baby and were prepared to move wherever to get away from her. She threatened to take them to court to get visitation rights, but likely wouldn’t win with her record.
Would you do absolutely no contact, send pictures only, or do supervised visits?
Bonus question: the family that had the girl die after falling from the window in the cruise ship, which was mostly the grandfathers fault, would you treat him the same?
