I worked in Housekeeping for years, you should definitely tip your room attendant. Some people do others don’t.

You don't have to tip anyone but you will never know how much that tip means to someone that works minimum wage and works hard for that. Some people do the bare minimum and those don't deserve it but if you have a housekeeper that is very friendly does great work then why not tip them. I am a housekeeper and when I get tips they literally make my whole day better. Even if it's just a dollar. I have gotten up to $60 tip from people because they love my friendly attitude and going above and beyond for each guest.

It's not that you should, it's that you can do it if the housekeeper was friendly and did their job well. They make minimum wage and I can guarantee a tip will make their day a whole lot better.
I tip when the housekeeper was nice, the room was cleaned, and overall there wwre no problems regarding of how they did their job. 
Same thing applies to waiters at a restaurant. Tip according to behaviour and service. 
Just my thoughts.

Ive worked in hotels for years and didnt know it was a thing until working. Yes... a lot of people at least tip when they vacate the room. But to make sure they get the money possibly give to front desk or directly to housekeeper. Sometimes the housemen that strip the beds of dirty linen after check out will steal the tips. Some places have things in practice to prevent this.
